Turbine - catch the 'Football' section
Highlights from our Shanghai Dance Festival performance of 'Turbine' are now available at our YouTube channel. You can catch them in bite-sized pieces, or settle in for the whole 6 minute ride!
The first bite-sized piece is available to watch here.
Featuring the finale to 'Turbine', the movement for this powerful endurance-test of a section was based (like the proud Queenslanders that we are) on commentary from an epic State of Origin try from years past.
The commentary from an iconic Cameron Smith try was transcribed, and the rhythm of each player's name was used to create motifs (short movements). The direction of play - "He's got room on the right, and on his left" - gave directions and descriptions for the movements that each dancer created. We edited them to create three long phrases, which each dancer performs separately. We also edited just the names of the players into three shorter phrases, which we repeat at various tempos. A trio partnering section was then added that we call "Scrum" - all partnered passing and throwing of bodies.
See if you can work out which movements are based on 'Lockyer', 'Tate' and 'Smith'. And spoiler alert, Queensland scored the try - but you already knew that, didn't you!
See Turbine on 22 February at Queensland Academies Creative Industries (QACI) Theatre, 61 Musk Avenue, Kelvin Grove at 7:30pm. Tickets at collusion.com.au
