Ann McLean

Chair

A trusted leader in the Australian arts sector, Ann McLean has worked in corporate and not-for-profit sectors for three decades. She has held marketing, production, and senior managerial roles, namely Director of Ausdance Qld 2011 – 2015; General Manager of Topology music ensemble 2009-2011 and Marketing Officer at Flying Arts 2007-2009. Ann holds the position of chair of the board of chamber music and fine art dance ensemble, Collusion, and a position on the management committee of advocacy and skills development group, Women in Theatre (Qld). She regularly guest lectures, reviews performance works, speaks on panels and presents at conferences.


Her company Ann McLean, Project Management {AM:PM} provides producing and grant writing services as well as strategic planning and advisory services. Clients include but not limited to Ellen Belloo, Margi Brown Ash (Force of Circumstance), Homunculus, Room to Play, The Good Room, Queensland Cabaret Festival, Queensland Music Festival, Rock and Roll Writers Festival, BOLD festival (ACT), The Arts Centre Gold Coast, Brisbane Powerhouse, Australian Haydn Ensemble (NSW), WHO Agencies’ artists, as well as Angela Toohey, Clint Bolster, Philip Channells, Lisa Wilson, Liz Lea and Liesel Zink.
Foundation trained in print media in the last century, Ann developed entrepreneurial skills in the youth arts sector as an activist, copy editor and art director. Ann managed arts-related businesses and projects in the 1990s before moving overseas. Ann brings applied production, international and national performing arts touring, communications and administration skills as well as strategic arts careers and enterprise development knowledge. A specialist in usefully connecting uniquely talented people, Ann invests in removing barriers and producing amazing projects that employ all sorts of artists.
With a dedicated practice in artist skills development and career advancement, at Flying Arts Ann marketed/toured 130 masterclasses in regional Queensland per year, communicating with approximately 55 council and community representatives; and re-branded the company.


In the music industry, as General Manager of new music ensemble Topology, she reshaped the brand and positioned them internationally. Ann established the band as an organisation, gaining triennial funding and touring grants, then drove the release of three full length recordings. Having successfully pitched for 18 gigs at Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM), Ann organised several tours. Ann managed the band through the production of six original new shows per year, often with collaborators and established the entrepreneurial arm of the business in regional composition and performance collaborations with emerging youth artists. 


Director of Ausdance Queensland, the peak body for dance Ann strengthened our state’s reputation for original contemporary work. Her programs provided Queensland dance, theatre and music artists with access to under-utilised studio spaces; subsidised participation in the APAM and the National Dance Forum; regular training and multiple accessible creative development grants, attached to a program of residencies at Cairns Centre of Contemporary Arts, Tanks Arts Centre and The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts. These programs continue to leave a legacy, especially in including dance artists of regional far north Queensland, Northern Territory the Torres Strait and south-east Queensland in exchange and collaboration nationally.
